Loving your Neighbour

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells us, “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Matthew 22:39, NIV). This commandment, second only to loving God, calls us to extend our love beyond the immediate circles we encounter. What does it truly mean to love our neighbour though? Especially those who are most vulnerable…

In our communities, many women and children face challenges and vulnerability. They might be struggling with homelessness, escaping abusive relationships, or grappling with the burdens of single parenthood. Some of these causes could be societal letdowns, family changes, or their own sins.

As Christians, we are called to support and uplift the poor, the fatherless and the widowed, in doing so we reflect Christ's love. How can you love your neighbour and be the hands and feet of Christ to vulnerable single mothers in your community?

1. Pray

Pray for the women and children and for ministries like Selah Place, Safe Families, Family Support Center and others walking alongside women and their children. Prayer brings comfort, strength, and change.

One of the most valuable gifts you can give is your time. Volunteering at Selah Place allows you to directly engage with and support the women and children who benefit from their services. Whether helping with childcare, providing mentorship, teaching a skill, or simply being a listening ear, your presence can make a significant difference.

2. Provide Financial Support

Organizations like Selah Place rely on financial contributions to sustain their programs and to grow. Consider setting aside a portion of your budget to support this mission. Your donations can help provide housing, parental skill training, education, and counselling, that encourage women to rebuild their lives. You can become a monthly Neighbourhood donor by Donating Now.

3. Donate Goods

In addition to financial support, donating goods is another practical way to assist. Women’s maternity clothing and non-perishable food items are often in high demand. Organize a drive in your church or community to collect items that can ease the daily struggles.

4. Raise Awareness

Spreading the word about the work being done at Selah Place can inspire others to get involved. Share the mission and stories on social media, talk about the work in your church groups, and encourage others to volunteer or donate. Awareness can lead to a ripple effect of support.

Showing Christ’s Love Through Action

Loving our neighbours means more than just feeling compassion; it involves taking action to make a difference in lives. By supporting organizations like Selah Place, we not only fulfill Jesus’ commandment but also become vessels of His love and grace in our communities.
